Oil Paintings by Scott Ward
United States
Scott Ward
studied commercial design and illustration at the University of Minnesota
before moving to Seattle, Washington in 1989. Ward has worked as an artist
and designer in graphics, clothing, interiors, landscape, and theater, and has
shown work at many galleries around the country. He describes his
paintings as "full of the light-hearted spirit that bridges the gap between
the surreal and sublime, with images that speak not only to the eyes, but to the
heart, mind, and spirit as well."
Ward's paintings have been exhibited by Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery, a small and intimate space located in the heart of Kirkland’s waterfront district on Lake Street South. It opened in 1991 as a venue for regional painters and printmakers, and has become one of Kirkland’s oldest galleries. With its emphasis on whimsical and expressionist work, it was natural that Ward's whimsical paintings would be exhibited there.
A review by Gunnar Nordstrom Gallery
"Scott Ward has been a regular participant in gallery shows for a number of years and easily has become a favorite. He develops and builds on a style that upon first glance appears simple and light but with greater inspection reveals deeper meaning. By using rich saturated colors he presents the spiritual realm with a creative playfulness. With simple lines and solid composition Ward explores themes of container and contained, freedom and limits, possibility and potential. These images reflect the vitality of the human spirit while pushing the limits of imagination. He enjoys mixing animals, human forms and landscapes in a surrealistic yet lighthearted blend of color and shape. He often fills his art with surprises giving not only himself, but the viewer a reason to pay close attention."
A review by Baas Art Gallery
[Ward had his first solo exhibition at Baas Art Gallery in June-July 2007. Here is what they said.]
"Although new to us, the wonderful and whimsical world of Scott Ward's artwork is well known in Seattle's cultural community. . .Ward has created memorable images for the Fremont Fair (Poster Artist 2006), Seattle Men's Chorus, the Woodland Park Zoo, and many corporate and private clients. His paintings are often described as magical, and draw their inspiration from toys, childhood games, and the world of dreams."
