artist Richard Young Richard Young is a British national, born in 1961 in Yorkshire. He has always had a natural flair for pencil and chalk drawing, and began oil painting at the age of 12. He enjoyed early regional competition success and media publicity for his work.

Following completion of advanced art studies, Richard embarked upon a career with a local engineering company. He worked throughout the Middle East for several years as a design consultant with various international companies.

Now based on Devon, United Kingdom, he has returned to art and his paintings, and is developing the commercial side of his art work via exhibitions and through his website (link at bottom of page). Richard's passion for figurative painting, influenced and inspired by the works of many classical fine arts painters, has helped him develop a true sense of realism that conveys both mood and atmosphere in his work.

Richard feels that creating and living with an original work of art is an exciting and extremely personal experience. He states, "It should satisfy and fulfill, yet enable the viewer to open and challenge his thoughts to a different perspective and wider dimension. The senses should be aroused and the mind stimulated. Art work should be viewed, pondered, admired, exhibited, and carefully scrutinized, with foresight given to the artist's perspective and intention."

He believes that the nude in particular is undoubtedly the ultimate natural subject in purity of form. Quoting Shakespeare, "The excellence of every art is its intensity, capable of making all disagreeables evaporate, from their being in their close relationship with beauty and truth."

Richard is a Fellow of the Royal Society for Arts, and a member of Fine Art Trade Guild, Design and Artists Copyright Society, and North Devon Arts. His paintings are displayed in the residences of private collectors worldwide.

Artist's Statement

"The style of my artwork is modern, yet classical/traditional and occasionally contemporary. The composition and technique I use is influenced and inspired by the realism and romanticism of my favorite post-Renaissance Masters and their wonderful, timeless masterpieces. . .Predominantly figurative and of females, the tendency of my artwork is towards carefully composed anonymity, capturing the emotions and self-belief of the subject, rather than characteristic individual representation.

"The creation of figurative artwork not only depicts the emotions of the artist, it transforms the artist's emotions. Also, it is far easier for all of us to carefully scrutinize figurative artwork and judge its anatomical accuracy, often creating a more personal understanding of specific favorite pieces. My figurative artwork is often sensual and sometimes tastefully erotic. . . Art is a thing of beauty, not just an investment."
