Oldrich Kulhánek was born on February 26, 1940 in Prague. Between 1958-64 he studied at the College of Applied Art in Prague. In 1971, Kulhánek was arrested by the Czech KGB and accused of the defamation of representatives of communist countries in his graphic sheets, because he used the face of Stalin in his art from 1968-1971. Thus, he was prohibited from exhibiting his works during the 70's. Nevertheless, his works found their way into the world illegally.
In 1990, Kulhánek visited the United States for the first time to take part in the Lithographic Workshop in Los Angeles. Since then he has been to the United States many times. In 1995 he was a guest lecturer at the University of Houston-Clear Lake in Texas. Between 1992 and 1993, Kulhánek was engaged in the new Czech bank notes project. Since 1990 his works have been exhibited all over the world.
The new millenium has not
disrupted Kulhánek's interest in human body. He has been working on a new
project, whose main motive is to represent the Biblical character of Job.
Oldrich Kulhánek's most recent exhibitions have been in the
Republic of South Africa (the first introduction of Czech art there)
and the Arnot Art Museum in New York.

In the graphic arts, lithography is a method of printing from a prepared flat stone or metal or plastic plate, invented in the late 18th century. A drawing is made on the stone or plate with a greasy crayon or tusche, and then washed with water. When ink is applied it sticks to the greasy drawing but runs off (or is resisted by) the wet surface allowing a print--a lithograph--to be made of the drawing. The artist, or other print maker under the artist's supervision, then covers the plate with a sheet of paper and runs both through a press under light pressure. For color lithography separate drawings are made for each color. [Used with permission from ArtLex Dictionary of Art -- Copyright © Michael Delahunt 1996-2008.]
"Famous son Franz Kafka once wrote that 'Prague never lets you go.' Seventeen years after the end of Communist rule, the Czech capital's cultural, culinary, and club scenes are in full swing--and its allure more potent than ever" -- from the introduction to an article in Condé Nast Traveler Nov 2006 by Guy Martin. It's an all-encompassing romp entitled "Prague Rocks." Indeed it does. And Madonna would agree. The article is online at http://www.concierge.com/cntraveler/articles/detail?articleId=10489&pageNumber=1 .
