Oil and Acrylic Paintings by Daniel Minter
United States
Daniel Minter was born in 1961 in Ellaville, Georgia, the ninth of twelve children. He now lives in Portland, Maine. He studied visual communications at the Art Institute of Atlanta. After graduating in 1981 he worked as a staff illustrator and computer graphic artist for seven years at a large corporation. During this time he created personal works on canvas of a mystical nature.
In 1988 he embarked on what he calls "the true path of an artist": To create images that reflect a personal connection to his culture and heritage, while examining the paradoxes of contemporary life. During this period Minter created painted wood-relief carvings in addition to his works on canvas. This medium functions as a link to one of the most dominant methods used in traditional African art. Minter says "My responsibility is to interpret what goes on in everyday life in my community, especially the unusual and the extraordinary. We have to have a way of viewing these things, else we forget or someone else will interpret them for us."
Always attempting to weave the traditional with the contemporary, Minter's work is often narrative, mingled with threads of Southern folklore and African spirituality. "In my work I am attempting to create and transmit images and concepts of my culture in a way that can be recognized and interpreted by the viewer who is interested, and for the viewer who is not interested, simply intriguing and well executed imagery...I look for the truth in repeated cultural patterns and allow that truth to influence my work...my dedication to my art is an extension of my dedication to my community."
His works have been exhibited in Brazil, and in Georgia, Lousiana, New York, Oregon, and Washington in the United States. He has illustrated several books.

Kwanzaa Celebration Kwanzaa is a non-religious African American Holiday that takes place over seven days, from Dec 26 to Jan 1. The festive mood of Kwanzaa was captured on Oct 16, 2004, when the new 37-cent Kwanzaa stamp was issued by the U.S. Postal Service as a holiday U.S. Postage Stamp. The stamp was designed by Daniel Minter, whose paintings on this page have been exhibited in the Images of Eyes Gallery since Dec 26, 2000. Go to the Kwanzaa postage stamp exhibit to see the stamp, Minter's statement about its design, and more information about the Kwanzaa Celebration. |
