Allison Merriweather, a native of Texas, is a true "outsider" who specializes in very large, detailed, and striking canvases, most of them five to seven feet in length.  She uses symbolism, often repeated across various works, in both large and small ways.  The ferocious animals in many of her works are an obvious theme; the little green grasshopper which hops among her canvases is a less obvious one.

"Allison Merriweather is an American painter living in Houston, Texas.  Her style and subject matter has been influenced by a childhood spent in the rural Southwest and California as well as her journeys through North Africa, Spain and Greece.  Her paintings have been exhibited throughout the United States, Scotland, and in numerous publications, including Illuminations and Man In Nature.  In 1993 she won a national award in painting and was awarded a solo show at the American Institute of Architecture.  Merriweather's paintings have been included in important public exhibitions, including the Hickory Museum of Art, Hickory, North Carolina, Hurn Museum, Savannah, Georgia, and the Art Car Museum, Houston, Texas."
