Oil Paintings by David Joaquin
Oregon, United States
"When I was a child, I was surrounded by art. My mother built our house by hand with recycled wood. All the cabinets, beds, and moulding were beautifully carved and adorned with painted vines and flowers. I remember in our room she had carved a piece of dark wood, and on it painted the star sign characters of each one in the family."
Davíd Joaquín was born in San Diego, California and was raised in California and Hawai‘i. He has exhibited in Hawai‘i, California, Oregon, Washington D.C., Washington State, France, Germany, and New Zealand.
He began working with exotic woods such as Milo, Koa, Hau, and Mango; wood pieces found in the fire used to heat the rocks of the sweat lodge. Patrick and Sharon, remarkable wood turner friends in Hawai‘i, provided these scraps and cutoffs.
"Everyone in our town of Lanikai knew we were having a sweat. They could smell the sweet wood burning. I t was on one of these nights that I saw an image in the fire. I pulled out a piece of Milo that I would later paint on and call it Red Moon.
"Having a sweat lodge in Hawai‘i exposed me to the many different tribes who would come to sweat with the family: Lakota, Zuni, Ute, Crow… each with different stories and ways, shared in the hot darkness. This is what I began to 'see' in my dreams and in the wood grains, encouraging me to study my own native heritage—the Chibcha."
Davíd now lives and works near Portland, Oregon, where he and his lover Moen-Ju reproduce the visions from rare woods using a mixture of printing techniques.
