Artwork by Rahmat Jabaril

Rahmat Jabarilis is 32 years old, a Bandung artist/activist with little formal training as an artist.  He studied for about 3 months with Ida Bagus Made in Bali, and has been especially influenced by the works of Hendra Gunawan, Marc Chagall, and Jean-Michel Basquiat. At the age of 15, he became an activist for the poor and politically oppressed.  This found its apex during the Jakarta and Bandung street demonstrations of 1997-1999.  He is also locally involved in discussions and programs aimed at improving the conditions of his neighbors, low-paid workers in a nearby rattan factory.  His involvement as a political activist is apparent in many of his works.

Artwork by Yoes Rizal

Yoes belongs to a generation of young wild artists graduating from Indonesia's most prestigious university, Institute Teknologie Bandung (ITB).  Born in 1956, he grew up in Jakarta after his family migrated to the 13-million strong metropolis from Sumatra.

Yoes has a broad range of themes: Jakarta street scenes and crowded markets, traditional dance motifs, village life, and above all women.  Yoes discovers women bathing, stretched across beds, amongst the rice paddies and under banana trees, waiting somewhere, lying in ones and twos on a deserted beach, and in portraits.  The sense of beauty discovered, of loneliness, yearning and self-indulgence strikes the viewer with broad splashes of color and essential experience.

Yoes is not only a color-rich painter, he is also an accomplished graphic artist.  To supplement his income, he has worked as a graphic designer for an international cosmetic and pharmacological company in Jakarta, as a graphic artist for The Jakarta Post (Indonesian's largest English-language newspaper), illustrator for the inter-cultural Bandung Banana Review, illustrator for David Alexander's children's book The Wide-mouthed Gecko, and graphic arts consultant for a World Bank project in central Java.

His works have been exhibited in Indonesia, Paris, and Turkey.

Artwork by Umar Sumatra

In the small West Java town of Sumedang, not far from Bandung, Umar first saw the light of day in 1948. He was raised and brought up in a village outside of Sumedang. Life in the village, where Islamic belief is underlain with even older animist traditions, has had a lasting impact on Umar's artistic life.

Umar has chiefly devoted himself to motifs deriving from Sundanese traditions in West Java. The tradition is rich in spirits, ghosts, ceremony, magic, as well as daily village life. One of his favorite motifs is horses and their role in certain local ceremonies. He ranges in style from surreal dream sequences to cubist to a unique discipline of stylized painterly detail.

Umar finished his university training in 1994 at IKIP, Bandung, after beginning his studies years before.

At twenty, Umar left the village to live in Bandung, the West Java provincial capital of 3 million. A prolific painter, he began exhibiting his paintings when he was 21-years-old and hasn't stopped to look back since.

Devoted exclusively to painting, Umar now lives and works in Bandung. His newly built atelier is full of light, works in progress, and the stories behind the paintings. His works have been exhibited in Indonesia, Switzerland, United States, Netherlands, Bali, Malaysia, and Japan.
