Artist's statement

"I enjoy painting romantic images of women in the Pre-Raphaelite* style.  I also like to incorporate the mystery and symbolic qualities of Renaissance portraits.  Above all, I seek to portray beauty and spirituality, and a sense of timeliness in all the work I do.  The elaborate headdresses worn by many of the figures intensifies the hypnotic effect on their gaze.  Translucent beadwork and elaborate garments take these women into another realm, and as silent observers and witnesses, they are our companions."

*Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood -- A group of English artists which formed an association in 1848 to recapture the beauty and simplicity of the medieval world.  Their painting style and art movement reacted to the sterility of English art, along with the materialism resulting from England's industrialization.  They identified Raphael (Italian, 1483-1520) with the scientific interests of Renaissance art, which they felt had led to modern technological development.  They aimed to study nature, to sympathize with what is direct, serious and heartfelt in earlier art, and to infuse their works with literary symbolism, bright colors, and attention to detail.  [Used with permission from ArtLex Dictionary of Art -- Copyright © Michael Delahunt 1996-2008.]
