Oil Paintings by Stjepan Dukic-Pista
Croatia
Stjepan Dukic-Pista was born December 5, 1949, in Lozan near Virovitica. His home is in Zagreb, the capital city of the Republic of Croatia. Zagreb is a city of creativity in the fine arts. Many Zagreb artists are famous names in the world art scene. In the 1960s, Zagreb was the center of the important movement called "The New Tendency."
From a review by Professor Stanko Spoljaric
"A special segment of Dukic's works is represented by portraits, in which he succeeds in finding a balance between the likeness to the subject and the necessary psychological characterization. Dukic is also attracted to figurative compositions with a note of the symbolic in the interpretation of the work.
"He frequently turns to the picturesque nature of town views of Zagreb, seeing in the appearance the complex layers of time, transforming it into a warmly colored image. Even rural scenes, with their wealth of themes from descriptive to frequently transcendental ones, approach a romantic atmosphere.
"His paintings are developed on the basis of classic aesthetics, within which the artist discovers and opens up a space for his individual experience and expression, which, together with a geometric abstract line, form an integral part (in the context of the entirety) of the work, and through this he confirms his singularity in contemporary Croatian art."

Croatia was named "Destination of the Year" by National Geographic Adventure magazine in its Nov. 2005 issue. Some excerpts from the magazine: "[Croatia] has what astronauts claim is the bluest sea on the planet, the Adriatic -- [Croatia is] the New Riviera and the New Capri ... last summer [2004] some five million tourists visited Croatia's coast -- [there are] 1,246 islands by one count -- easy island hopping -- ancient haunts and real salt-of-the-sea excitement ... spectacular vistas ... ultrahip, centuries-old towns."
From The Daily Mail [London], Jun 11, 2005: "Croatia probably has Europe's most spectacular coastline, with mountains tumbling into the island-scattered, clear sea. Ruled for centuries by Venice, the architecture of the surprisingly well-preserved medieval towns is gorgeous. Marvel at the remains of Diocletian's Palace* in hectic Split, then take a ferry to the sleepy island of Brac and chill out on the magnificent, ever-shifting Y-shaped beach at Bol. Go there before it's too late."
From The New York Times, May 1, 2005, an article by Alex Crevar ("Going to Zagreb"): "There's a bubbling just below the surface in Zagreb, the Croatian capital of one million people, and most visitors sense it instantly. It's a well-worn, East-meets-West passion called Balkan culture that equally embraces a consumer's desire to visit a newly opened fragrance shop and the cafe next door where an entire goat turns slowly on a spit." A bit dated, but it's a good read: the June 16, 2002, article by Daniel and Barbara Zwerdling-Rothschild in the travel section of The Washington Post. What's Hot in 2006: The United States Tour Operators Association -- whose members account for the vacations of more than 10.5 million travelers yearly -- revealed the year's top destinations and trends for packaged travel. China and South America were cited as the hottest up-and-coming destinations for packages and tours, with Croatia a close second. However, when asked what will be hot for 2006, Croatia led the way, followed by China. [USTOA Press Release Dec 28, 2005]
