Oil Portrait Paintings by Ellen de Groot
Netherlands
Ellen de Groot, born in 1959, is a painter of portraits and triptychs in the classical tradition of oil on panel. Her oil paintings are inspired by the Flemish Primitives, Hans Memling, Rogier van der Weyden, and Hans Holbein. Ellen considers their works to be models of perfection in painting technique, material-expression, composition, and the use of color, in that they breathe the peace and harmony which she wants in her own work.

"The Bride"

"The depiction of women is the most important theme in my work. Furthermore the painting of tissue and the qualtity of cloth-materials is of considerable importance. After a foundation course in Art and drawing followed with a fashion-design course, I discovered around my 25th year 'the wonderful world of oil-paint'. Almost my whole life I had been drawing, but oil paint was a straightforward revelation. 'Love at first sight'.
"This painting. . .is my very first self-portrait. After a difficult time in my life, still undamaged, portrayed as a bride. Oil on panel, as all my paintings."

"Portrait of Nathalie, a French model, who because of her 'medieval' expression, has often been painted by me."

"Portrait of Miss Blondeau from France where I have lived for eight years. Her striking profile challenged me to make this portrait, with on the background the surroundings of a village in the Jura.
"An example for me are the paintings of Pyke Koch (Dutch realistic painter) on which this painting is inspired."

"My niece and godchild Elena [in both Petekind portraits], her face is so uniquely interesting to paint, that for many years she will still be a model."

"This painting is a self-portrait made after my walk on the Way of St. James in May and June 2005. 'De Schuilplaats' means 'hiding place or shelter.' The background of the scene is an actual place somewhere in the Auvergne [in central France]."
