Watercolor Paintings by Carol Carter
Missouri, United States
Carol Carter is an award-winning established painter from St. Louis, Missouri, United States, working primarily in watercolors, one of the most intimate art forms. Her large-scale watercolors overflow with light, and display vibrant and vivid colors that are not only full of life but inspired by life itself.
The nude watercolor paintings previously included in this exhibit were moved on Mar 14, 2008, to a new exhibit of Carol's works in Images of Eyes Gallery II.
Artist’s Statement
"Having grown up in Florida, my strongest visual impression of an environment for human activity is water. In much of my work, water, either literal or suggested, provides the setting for anonymous figures. Because the figures are abstracted, they become generic; their generic nature allows for expansion of the narrative beyond a personal, anecdotal statement to portray a more universal human condition.
"The paintings contain duality: clarity and ambiguity; sanctuary and threat; pleasure and pain. The use of vibrant, saturated colors--beautiful, but confrontational in their intensity--contributes to the tension between these extremes. The large scale of the watercolor and acrylic pieces is also confrontational. The resulting images are seductive, powerful, and strangely disquieting.
"For me, painting should have an intimacy, a mysteriousness, a sensuality. At its best, my work also has an edge; something in it that takes a moment, a second look, an effort to comprehend."

Carol's son, Evan, at

The painting above of Carol's son, Evan, is the last one in Carol's "Growth Series." The first one in the series is a painting of Evan at age 3 days in 1986. The numerous paintings in the series not only document Evan growing up, but they also illustrate how Carol's artwork has changed over the years.
Carol said, "Around the age of 4 years, I decided the paintings had to be much more than his face (how he looks on the outside). I needed to include 'who' he was at each age, because he was such an individual. The challenge became greater: to find a 'look' that best described him at each age. For example, at age 11, he can be found on the top of a ferris wheel, laughing and giggling. This best described him, because he was/is a child full of life and humor...that is why it is called the 'Growth Series'."
The paintings in the Growth Series are shown at the end of Carol's slide show presentation, and they are always everyone's favorites, because most people are parents and immediately connect with the bonding that takes place between parent and child.
