Watercolor Paintings by Carol Carter

Carol Carter is an award-winning professional artist from St. Louis, Missouri, United States, working primarily in watercolors, one of the most intimate art forms.  Although she paints large format acrylics, her precise control of washes and transparent color harmonies make her watercolors some of the most unusual contemporary works in the medium.

The Everglades National Park, in Florida, the only subtropical wilderness in North America, is known for its rich wildlife, particularly large wading birds.  Last year, Carol Carter entered a national competition to be an artist in the Park's Artist in Residence in Everglades ProgramOn Jan 12, 2010, Carol was notified that she had been chosen to participate in this program for a month this summer.  The program is funded entirely by contributions to the National Park Service from individuals and private foundations, and accommodates three to six residents a year.

This exhibit of Carol's watercolor artwork is in four sections:

Section 1 -- Graduation paintings of Carol's son, Evan Carter Clark, at age 23
   Section 2 -- A painting of Carol's son, Evan, at age 22
Section 3 -- A group of four commissioned portraits
Section 4 -- Carol's painting of the Rock Church Choir of St. Louis, commissioned by Verizon

You can see all earlier paintings of Evan (one each year starting at age 3 days) in Carol's "Growth Portraits" series (link at bottom of page).  Carol said, "Around the age of 4 years, I decided the paintings had to be much more than [Evan's] face (how he looks on the outside).  I needed to include 'who' he was at each age, because he was such an individual.  The challenge became greater:  to find a 'look' that best described him at each age.  For example, at age 11, he can be found on the top of a ferris wheel, laughing and giggling...".

Section 4 -- Verizon's Search for the Best Church Choirs
in America -- "How Sweet the Sound" competition
2009

Verizon Wireless challenged church choirs from coast to coast in the company's nationwide "How Sweet the Sound" gospel choir competition in 2009.  Choirs in 11 cities had a chance to compete in the national grand finale in Atlanta on Nov 8, 2009, for a cash prize of up to $50,000 and the title of the best church choir in America.  The tour visited St. Louis on Sept 13 at Scottrade Center.  The Rock Church Choir of St. Louis was an entrant judged in the preliminary stages of the competition.  Verizon commissioned Carol Carter to paint her interpretation of the choir.

In 2009, the Atlanta West Pentecostal Church Choir earned the title of The Best Church Choir in America.  "How Sweet the Sound" is back for 2010 with online registration.  For details, visit http://www.howsweetthesound.com/.
