Oil Paintings by Minas Avetisian
Armenia

Minas Avetisian was born on July 20, 1928, in the Armenian village of Djadjur.  Avetisian follows the national traditions in painting, yet he never resorts to slavish imitation or stylization.  He is one of those Armenian artists who "put the color back into painting."  Such an expression might seem strange, but if you look through the yellowed pages of ancient manuscripts, you will understand what is meant: there on the parchment, in all their splendor, shine the bright, sonorous colors: blue, yellow, green, and red.  The intensity of the colors in some of Avetisian's pictures is unequaled in contemporary Armenian painting.

Khor Virap is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Armenia.  It holds a special place in Armenian history, mainly due to the legend of Grigor Louisavoritch (St. Gregory the Illuminator) who was allegedly imprisoned for 13 years in the dungeon of Khor Virap before curing King Trdat III of a disease.  This caused the conversion of the king and Armenia into the first officially Christian nation in the world in the year 301.
